Menopause

In Australia, the average age of menopause is 51 years, but it’s normal to have menopause anywhere between 45 and 55 years. Menopause is actually only one day of your life (which is exactly 12 months after your last menstrual period), however post-menopause is forever as your body no longer has the ability to produce hormones.

For some women menopausal symptoms will be mild and tolerable and subside after a few years. For others, living without these hormones can cause debilitating symptoms in a wide range of body systems: vasomotor, cognitive, psychological, emotional, sexual, musculoskeletal, skin and genitourinary (vagina/vulva/bladder) than continue for many years pre and post menopause.

Every woman’s journey through menopause will be different but there are safe and effective treatment options available so you do not have to suffer in silence.

Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the stage of life before menopause when your body is transitioning.  It is a natural part of women’s life but can be chaotic due to erratic and fluctuating hormone levels.  Perimenopause usually starts in a woman’s 40s and can persist from 4 to 10yrs.

Menstruation can become irregular, but contraception is still required. The physical and emotional symptoms during perimenopause can range in severity and for 20% of women are severe enough to interfere with functioning in daily life. These symptoms can have a significant detrimental impact on relationships within the family unit and workplace.

Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI)

Premature Ovarian Insufficiency is a loss of function of the ovaries in women who are less than 40 years of age. The ovaries do not release eggs regularly and do not produce usual amounts of oestrogen.

Symptoms of POI can include irregular or no menstrual periods with associated menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, sleep disturbance, aching joints, vaginal dryness and mood changes.

Long-term health consequences can include infertility, cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. Replacing lost hormones in these women can vastly help prevent these chronic conditions and provide a better quality of life.

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)

PMDD causes severe emotional and mood-related symptoms before your period that make it hard to function at work, school and in relationships.  PMDD symptoms occur one to two weeks before your period and then usually settle after your period starts.

Common emotional symptoms include extreme or sudden mood changes such as rage or panic, increased irritability, feeling overwhelmed or out of control, and trouble concentrating. Physical symptoms can include tiredness or low energy, change in appetite, insomnia, sore breasts, bloating and joint pain. This condition unfortunately commonly worsens in the perimenopausal period, making the mood symptoms of the menopausal transition more prominent and disabling.
